The Lower Broad Mitigation Bank is located in Fairfield County, South Carolina, and encompasses approximately 289 acres of protected mitigation area within a 579-acre property. Situated within the Lower Broad watershed (HUC 03050106) in the Piedmont Ecoregion, the bank is immediately adjacent to the U.S. Forest Service’s Sumter National Forest, Enoree Ranger District, providing exceptional landscape connectivity and long-term ecological value.
Established to restore, enhance, and preserve high-quality aquatic resources, the Lower Broad Mitigation Bank provides a dependable source of compensatory mitigation for permitted stream impacts within its approved service area. Restoration efforts address the effects of historical land uses, including agriculture, silviculture, and deforestation, by improving stream function, enhancing riparian buffers, and preserving intact aquatic ecosystems. In addition, the project supports the reestablishment of diverse native hardwood communities in areas previously dominated by pine forests, creating more resilient and ecologically valuable habitat.
The Lower Broad Mitigation Bank is expected to generate approximately 56,302 stream mitigation credits, providing a reliable source of compensatory mitigation for infrastructure, transportation, utility, energy, and development projects. The bank’s primary service area is the Lower Broad watershed (HUC 03050106), with approved secondary service areas that include the Upper Broad (HUC 03050105), Tyger (HUC 03050107), and Enoree (HUC 03050108) watersheds.
