Sweet Water Wetland and Stream Mitigation Bank is a 40.87-acre site located along Sugar Creek in the Lower Kaskaskia Watershed in Madison County, Illinois. The bank site will benefit the watershed as agricultural and highway runoff will be filtered as it flows across the Bank site. Occasional floodwaters from Sugar Creek will be filtered in the established wetlands, which will also store flood waters and provide substantial wildlife benefits. Sweet Water Wetland and Stream Mitigation Bank was approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District in November 2023 for a potential of 18.98 wetland credits and 22,105.50 stream credits. The mitigation plan includes the restoration and enhancement of forested and emergent wetland habitats as well as restore, enhance, and preserve 19.20 acres of riparian buffers along two stream channels (Sugar Creek and Spanker Branch).
Sweet Water Wetland and Stream MB is approved to offset wetland and stream impacts within the Lower Kaskaskia (HUC 07140204) and Shoal (HUC 07140203) watersheds, which includes portions of Macoupin, Madison, Bond, St. Clair, Clinton, Washington, Randolph, Montgomery, Monroe, and Perry Counties.
